Inspired by the Villa Gamberaia near Florence and La Toscana (aka Sotto Il Monte) by George Washington Smith in Montecito, this villa presents a splendid Italianate backdrop for a prominent contemporary art collection.
The U-shaped front façade features a risalto entry motif based on Italian Baroque churches, classical window and door surrounds, corner quoins and exposed rafter tails in the Tuscan style. The garden façade has projecting wings with Palladian windows flanking a central arcaded loggia.
The elliptically curved stair of the entrance hall is a counterpoint to the vaulted gallery that displays large artworks. Interiors are articulated by Doric columns, classical door surrounds, carved mahogany doors and antique fireplaces.
